Hey Reader,

Terry here - hope you’re having a productive week so far!

So… I’ve decided to make my emails easier for you to read by decoupling updates to the Part-Time Productivity Lab from my weekly broadcasts.

Hope you’ll appreciate that :)

Next, I’ve started a little experiment to expand my reach by contributing to Collaborative Articles on LinkedIn.

It looks like my ideal students are consuming content on that front, so I thought I’d give it a try.

Today’s article is an expanded answer in response to a question about preventing burnout on that platform.

I felt it might be meaningful for you here, and so here you go!

Reminder: There's more to your life than your profession.

I get it - you love what you do in your work so much that it's difficult to stop.

But don’t forget you also have roles to play in other important areas of your life.

  • Being a caring parent to your kids
  • Being a loving partner to your spouse
  • Being an organised caretaker to your home
  • Being a encouraging physical trainer for your body
  • Being an intentional practitioner of your craft & hobbies

And the list goes on.

These roles need their fair share of your time, energy, & attention.

With these in short supply, where & how do you draw the line?

In my case, I’ve always designed my side businesses around my ideal lifestyle.

In practice, this means I allocate time & energy to the core, non-negotiable areas of my life first, for example:

  • Date nights with my wife every Friday
  • Daily gym sessions with my trainer
  • Undisturbed me-time over dinner

Whatever is left then goes into my side business efforts:

  • Writing content for social media & this newsletter
  • Getting on coaching calls with my clients
  • Settling business admin matters

As a part-time entrepreneur, I’m effectively working 2 “jobs” instead of 1, so it’s important that I remember to take good care of myself.

If I don’t, I’ll not only compromise the quality of work I deliver in my day job, but also the experience I give to my clients in my side business.

And that is something I want to avoid as much as humanly possible.

The harsh truth is that neither your boss or your clients care about the fact that you’re working for them in a full-time or part-time capacity.

All they care about is how well you can deliver on your promises & commitments to them.

That’s why it’s super important to “pay yourself first” - making sure you’re in tip-top condition at all times to do right by yourself and the people you’ve made a commitment to.

So the next time you want to start your next side business, do not start doing anything until you have a well-thought out answer to the following prompts:

  1. What are the key, non-negotiable areas of your life for the next 6-9 months?
  2. How much time do you have left per day or week after blocking out your schedule for these activities?
  3. What are the checkpoints & milestones of your side business that you can realistically deliver within that time?

Setting your intentions and expectations right in the beginning is crucial if you want to build a thriving & sustainable side business.

Got questions that you’d like to clarify or like me to share my 2 cents on your answers?

Just hit reply and let me know - I’ll read every email and give you my no-nonsense response.

That’s it from me today.

Stay motivated, and have a great week ahead!

Chat soon,

Terry 😉
